Coaching vs. Consulting: Which Do You Need?

Beth Yehaskel · December 10, 2025

Understanding the difference between coaching and consulting is essential for leaders seeking targeted support to improve business outcomes. Both offer valuable guidance but serve distinct purposes.

Coaching focuses on unlocking a client’s potential by encouraging self-discovery and growth. A coach facilitates reflection and helps individuals or teams develop skills, build confidence, and set actionable goals. Coaching is often ongoing and emphasizes asking powerful questions rather than providing direct answers. It’s ideal for leaders looking to improve leadership capability, decision-making, and problem-solving through greater self-awareness.

Consulting involves an expert providing specific advice and solutions based on knowledge and experience. Consultants analyze challenges, offer recommendations, and may implement strategies to address business problems. Consulting engagements are typically project-based and focus on tangible issues like process inefficiencies, market entry, or technology adoption.

Which do you need?

  • If you want to develop your leadership skills or encourage a team’s growth through self-led insight, coaching is likely the better choice.
  • If you need expert guidance to solve a specific business challenge or implement new strategies, consulting may be more suitable.

Sometimes organizations benefit from both: consultants to address immediate operational needs and coaches to sustain long-term leadership development and adaptability. Assess your current challenges and goals to determine which approach, or blend, will best accelerate your success.
